Porsche chose Leipzig as the production site for the Macan in 2011. The former assembly plant became a full factory with its own body shop and paint shop. Porsche says the name Macan is derived from the Indonesian word for tiger. Porsche unveiled the Macan, its first compact SUV, at the Los Angeles auto show in November 2013.
Series production began at the end of 2013. The Macan S had a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 with 340 hp. The Macan Turbo had a twin-turbo 3.6-liter V6 with 400 hp. Macan number 100,000 rolled off the line in June 2015. Leipzig built the one millionth Macan in July 2025. Porsche delivered 82,795 Macans in 2024.
In 2024, the second generation went into series production with a fully electric drive. The all-electric Macan had its world premiere on January 25, 2024, in Singapore. Porsche had already ended combustion Macan sales in Europe by the beginning of 2025. Porsche planned to end combustion Macan production at the end of July 2026. The Macan name is now reserved for the battery-electric series.
