Porsche began development of the 928 in February 1972 at the Weissach Development Center. Ernst Fuhrmann chaired the executive board. He envisioned a sports car with the engine in front and the transmission in the rear. Porsche calls this layout a transaxle construction. Eleven cars made their world debut at the 1977 Geneva Motor Show.

The 928 used a water-cooled V8. The first 4.5-liter engine produced 240 PS. The car had four seats and a nearly 50:50 weight distribution between the axles. The rear axle, called the Weissach axle, worked like passive rear wheel steering. The 928 was the European Car of the Year for 1978. Porsche says it was the first sports car to receive that honor.

The engine later grew to 5.4 liters. The 928 S4 of model years 1987 to 1991 had a 5.0-liter engine with 320 PS. The 928 GT arrived in spring 1989 with up to 330 PS. The 928 GTS of model years 1992 to 1995 was the last evolutionary stage, with 350 PS. Production stopped in 1995 after 61,056 cars.
