Mazda introduced the RX-7 in Japan in March 1978. It replaced the Savanna RX-3. A team led by Matasaburo Maeda designed the car.

The first cars used a twin-rotor 12A Wankel engine of 1,146 cc. The small engine sat behind the front axle line. A 1981 facelift brought the FB prefix. In September 1983, Japan received the Savanna RX-7 Turbo. Its turbocharged 12A made 163 hp. In 1981 the RX-7 won the Spa 24 Hours.

The second generation, the FC, ran from 1985 to 1992. Its 13B engine was standard across the range. Four-wheel disc brakes, rack-and-pinion steering and independent rear suspension became standard.

Production of the third-generation FD began in late 1991. Its 13B-REW engine used sequential twin turbochargers. Power rose from 255 PS in 1992 to 280 PS by 2002. By 1996 the RX-7 had left European and North American markets. After the final facelift in 1998, it was a Japan-only model. Mazda built 811,634 RX-7s between 1978 and 2002. The RX-8 followed in 2003.
