Ferrari presented the 458 Italia at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2009. It succeeded the F430. Pininfarina designed the body. A mid-rear 4.5-liter V8 made 570 cv at 9,000 rpm. Ferrari engineered it to reach 9,000 rpm, a first on a road car with this cylinder capacity. The 458 Italia reached 100 km/h in under 3.4 seconds.

The 458 Spider was introduced at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. Ferrari called it the first car to combine a mid-rear engine with a retractable folding hard top. The 458 Speciale was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2013. Its V8 made 605 cv at 9,000 rpm. Ferrari called it the most powerful naturally aspirated V8 ever built at Maranello. The open 458 Speciale A was unveiled at the 2014 Paris Motor Show. Ferrari limited it to 499 examples.

Racing versions followed. Ferrari built the GT2, later the GTE, for endurance racing, plus a GT3 car and a Grand-Am car. The 458 Challenge served the Ferrari one-make series. The 458 GT3 won nearly 500 races on four continents. The 458 GTE won twice in the GTE-Pro class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The 488 GTB replaced the 458 and debuted at the 2015 Geneva Auto Show.
