The De Tomaso Pantera was built from 1972 to 1993.

The L, the most traded version: The original Pantera L introduced America to De Tomaso's Italian-American formula when Lincoln-Mercury began importing them in 1972. Tom Tjaarda's timeless wedge design housed a 351 Cleveland V8 producing 248 horsepower—modest by today's standards but thrilling in 1972. The $10,000 price tag positioned it between Corvettes and Ferraris, offering exotic looks with Ford reliability. Early L models are distinguished by their chrome bumpers, smaller flares, and cleaner lines before later safety regulations added bulk. Quality control issues plagued the initial run, but surviving examples that have been properly sorted represent exceptional value in today's market. The L established the Pantera legend and remains the most accessible entry point into De Tomaso ownership, though pristine examples are increasingly difficult to find.
