Chevrolet launched the Monte Carlo on September 18, 1969, as a 1970 model. It was a personal-luxury coupe closely based on the GM A-body package. Designers used the 116-inch sedan wheelbase for more visual presence. The base price was $3,123. That included a 350-cubic-inch V8 with 250 hp. Buyers could order the SS package with an available 454 V8.
The Monte Carlo used the standard A-body intermediate chassis from 1973 through 1977. It was downsized for 1978. The rear-drive G-body platform launched in 1978 and was restyled in 1981. For 1983, Chevrolet added a Monte Carlo SS with option code Z65. It was the first Monte Carlo SS since 1971. Chevrolet developed a sleek aerodynamic nose to help on NASCAR super speedways. The SS used a 305-cubic-inch V8 rated at 175 hp. Sales of the SS lasted until 1988. After an abbreviated 1988 model year, the two-door Lumina replaced the Monte Carlo.
The name returned for 1995 as a front-wheel-drive coupe. For 2000, the SS name came back. It was the first front-drive SS in the Chevrolet lineup. For 2006, the SS gained a 5.3-liter V8 with 303 hp and 323 lb-ft of torque. Chevrolet discontinued the Monte Carlo after the 2007 model year.
