The Impala name first appeared on the 1956 Corvette Impala show car at that year's GM Motorama. The production Impala debuted in 1958 as the top of the Bel Air line. It became its own series in 1959. An all-new design arrived for 1961, along with the first Super Sport option. A limited-production 409 V-8 followed in January 1961. Chevrolet sold over 1 million Impalas in 1965 alone, a single-model record.
A new 396 V-8 replaced the 409 at mid-1965, and the Caprice took the top spot above the Impala. The Impala SS made its final bow in 1969. The 10-millionth Impala was assembled during the 1972 model year. A downsized body arrived for 1977. Production stopped after 1985, in what was expected to be the last Impala.
It returned in 1994 as a four-door Impala SS based on the Caprice, with a Corvette-derived LT1 V-8. That car ran through 1996. A front-wheel-drive Impala came back for 2000. The ninth generation began with the 2006 model year. From 2014, the ninth-generation car was sold to fleets as the Impala Limited. The tenth generation offered an inline four-cylinder for the first time. Production ended in February 2020, at the Detroit-Hamtramck plant.
