The BMW M2 began when the 1 Series Coupe was leaving production. Many inside BMW reportedly suggested front-wheel drive. Two executives, Klaus Fröhlich and Ian Robertson, wanted a rear-wheel drive successor. They targeted a modern version of the 2002 turbo. The M2 made its public debut at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show in January 2016.
The first generation, the F87, used a tweaked N55 engine with 365 horsepower. Buyers chose a six-speed manual or a dual-clutch automatic. In 2017 BMW sold a performance edition capped at 150 units, all for the U.S. The M2 Competition later took the S55 engine from the M3 and M4, rated at 405 horsepower. The 2020 M2 CS used an uprated S55 with an estimated 444 horsepower. BMW said it would make only 2,200 CS models. The F87 left production in 2021.
The second generation, the G87, debuted in 2022 as a 2023 model year. It uses the S58 twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six from the M3 and M4. In the M2 it makes 453 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed manual is standard in the U.S. and an eight-speed automatic is available. The car is rear-drive only. The G87 was still on sale for the 2026 model year.
