About the 1989 Lotus Elan

The M100 Elan marked Lotus's bold departure from their fiberglass tradition, embracing front-wheel drive and a turbocharged Isuzu 1.6-liter four-cylinder producing 162 horsepower. Despite purist skepticism, this Elan delivered classic Lotus handling magic through meticulous suspension tuning and a remarkably low 2,300-pound curb weight. The pop-up headlights and flowing Peter Stevens design aged gracefully, while the sophisticated multi-link rear suspension provided the grip and balance that made Colin Chapman famous. Only 3,855 examples were built during its six-year run, making it the rarest production Elan. Today's collectors appreciate the M100's unique position as Lotus's final attempt at mainstream success before returning to their lightweight, rear-drive roots. Clean examples command premium prices, particularly the later SE models with their revised suspension geometry and improved build quality.
