Colin Chapman's mid-engine masterpiece emerged as Lotus's most radical road car yet. The Europa's fiberglass body wrapped around a steel backbone chassis, housing a Renault-sourced 1.5-liter four-cylinder behind the driver. Weighing just 1,500 pounds, it delivered pure driving dynamics that rivaled Porsche's 914 at half the price. Early Twin Cam models from 1971 onwards packed Lotus's own twin-cam engine, transforming performance dramatically. The distinctive wedge profile, penned by Ron Hickman, influenced supercar design for decades. Production totaled around 9,230 units across all variants, making clean examples increasingly sought after. Values have climbed steadily as collectors recognize the Europa's significance in mid-engine sports car evolution.
