About the 1967 De Tomaso Mangusta
Giugiaro's angular masterpiece preceded the Pantera as De Tomaso's first serious production car, establishing the template for Italian exotica powered by American V8s. Named after the mongoose that kills cobras, a not-so-subtle dig at Shelby, the Mangusta paired dramatic scissor doors with a 289 Ford V8 producing 306 horsepower. Only 401 were built between 1967-1971, with most going to Europe due to DOT complications. The mid-engine layout proved tricky, with 68% rear weight bias making handling challenging, but the Mangusta's visual impact was undeniable. Early examples featured the coveted 289, while later cars got the less desirable 302. Today, clean Mangustas represent the genesis of the De Tomaso legend, commanding premium prices for their rarity and Giugiaro pedigree.
