In January 1951 Toyota presented a prototype four-wheel-drive vehicle to Japan's National Police Reserve. It used a 3.4-liter Type B six-cylinder gasoline engine from a four-ton truck. Toyota launched it in August 1951 as the Toyota BJ. Series production started in August 1953. In 1954 the name Land Cruiser replaced Toyota Jeep BJ, because Willys had trademarked the name Jeep.
The 20 series arrived in August 1955. The 40 series launched in 1960. The 55 series Station Wagon followed in 1967. The 60 series launched in 1980, and the last one was built in December 1989 after 406,700 examples. The 80 series arrived in 1990, and Japanese production ended in 1997. The 100 series launched in 1998. Its 4.7-liter V8 was the first V8 fitted to a Land Cruiser.
Toyota says the 200 series launched in 2007. Its 4.5-liter twin-turbo V8 diesel made 286 bhp. On August 2, 2021, Toyota launched the 300 Series, a complete redesign of the 200 Series. It uses the GA-F platform and a new 3.5-liter V6 twin-turbo gasoline engine. Output is 305 kW (415 PS).
Toyota unveiled the 250 Series on August 2, 2023. The Land Cruiser was first introduced in the United States in 1958. The 2024 Land Cruiser returned there after a two-year hiatus. It uses the i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain with a 2.4-liter turbocharged engine and 326 hp.
