Toyota showed the FJ Cruiser as a concept at the 2003 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Toyota unveiled the production version at the 2005 Chicago Auto Show. Toyota named the FJ40, the original 4Runner and 4WD compact pickups as inspiration. It was built off a modified 4Runner platform. Deliveries were to begin in the spring of 2006.
The FJ Cruiser used a 4.0-liter V6. A five-speed automatic transmission was standard, with an optional six-speed manual on the 4WD model. The body was a two-door with a rear access door. Toyota later said that more than 200,000 units had been sold since 2006.
On November 5, 2013, Toyota unveiled the 2014 FJ Cruiser Trail Teams Ultimate Edition at the SEMA Show. Toyota said the FJ Cruiser would end its production run at the conclusion of the 2014 model year. Only 2,500 Ultimate Editions were to be built.
The FJ Cruiser left the U.S. market in 2014. Toyota subsidiary Hino kept building it for other markets, including the Middle East, the Philippines and South Africa. In Japan it disappeared in 2018. Toyota South Africa confirmed the global discontinuation of the product line as of December 2022.
