The Toyota Celica A20 was built from 1970 to 1977.
The Celica, the most traded version: The first-generation Celica established Toyota's sports car credentials with clean, purposeful styling that borrowed cues from American pony cars while maintaining Japanese precision. Built on the Carina platform, the TA20/TA22 series featured a distinctive fastback silhouette penned by Toyota's design team under Satoru Nozaki's direction. Power came from a range of twin-cam four-cylinders, including the legendary 2T-G that would later dominate rally stages. The ST and GT variants offered genuine performance credentials, while the base models provided affordable sports car appeal. Production totaled over 220,000 units across seven years, making it Toyota's most successful sports car launch. Today, clean examples are increasingly sought after by collectors who appreciate the Celica's role in legitimizing Japanese sports cars globally. The TA22's rally pedigree and connection to Toyota's racing heritage make it particularly desirable, especially in original ST or GT specification with the twin-cam engine intact.
