The Pontiac Fiero was built from 1984 to 1988.

The Fiero, the most traded version: The Pontiac Fiero represents GM's bold mid-engine experiment that almost worked. Launched in 1984 as America's first mass-produced mid-engine sports car since the Corvair, the Fiero packed a 2.5L Iron Duke four-cylinder behind the driver in a space-frame chassis with composite body panels. While the base model's 92 horsepower was modest, the Fiero's 50/50 weight distribution and nimble handling revealed genuine sports car DNA. Early cars suffered from reliability issues and unfortunate engine fires, but 1985-1988 models addressed most problems. The Fiero's real tragedy was its cancellation just as engineers perfected the formula—1988 models with revised suspension are genuinely excellent drivers. Today, clean examples are increasingly sought after, particularly among enthusiasts who appreciate the Fiero's unique place in American automotive history and its potential as a modification platform.
