It had the first hydropneumatic suspension in a Mercedes-Benz. The 300 SD of May 1978 was the first diesel in this class. It was sold only in the USA and Canada. Antilock brakes developed with Bosch were available from the fall of 1978. Production of the 116 series totaled 473,035 cars from 1972 to 1980.

The W 126 ran from 1979. Production reached 818,036 sedans plus 74,060 coupes. It offered a driver airbag from 1981. The W 140 arrived in 1991 with a 6.0-liter V12. It was the first Mercedes-Benz with a production 12-cylinder engine. The W 140 stayed in production for 8 years. The W 220 S 55 AMG used a supercharged 5.4-liter V8 with 500 hp. The W 221 followed in 2005, and the W 222 in 2013.

The W 223 was unveiled in September 2020. A revised W 223 was unveiled in January 2026. Mercedes-Benz still builds the S-Class.
