The Jaguar E-Type Series 1 was built from 1961 to 1968.
The Roadster 4.2, the most traded version: The 4.2-liter Series 1 represents the sweet spot for many E-Type enthusiasts, combining the original's pure aesthetics with improved drivability. Introduced in late 1964, the larger displacement XK engine maintained 265 horsepower while adding crucial torque—283 lb-ft versus 260 in the 3.8. More importantly, Jaguar fitted a proper all-synchromesh gearbox, eliminating the 3.8's notoriously balky first gear. The 4.2 retained all the Series 1 visual cues that purists cherish: covered headlights, toggle switches, and that distinctive flat floor. Production ran through 1968, yielding 9,550 roadsters before Series 2 regulations forced styling compromises. Today's collectors often prefer the 4.2's improved refinement while still enjoying the authentic Series 1 experience, making these among the most usable classic E-Types.
