The Ford GT40 Mk III was built in 1967.
The Mk III Road Car, the most traded version: The GT40 Mk III Road Car represents Ford's attempt to create a civilized GT40 for wealthy enthusiasts, with only seven examples ever built. Despite sharing the 427 big-block with racing variants, the road car was detuned to 306 hp for reliability and equipped with creature comforts like proper interior trim and luggage space. The five-speed ZF transaxle provided more refined gearing than the race cars' four-speed units. Built at Slough in 1967, these ultra-rare machines were essentially hand-built specials, each costing more than a contemporary Ferrari. The Mk III's rarity makes it perhaps the most exclusive American supercar ever produced. For collectors, finding an authentic Mk III Road Car represents acquiring one of the automotive world's ultimate unicorns—a street-legal piece of Le Mans history.
