Ferrari showed the Testarossa at the Paris Motor Show in October 1984. It was the heir to the 512 BBi. Pininfarina designed it. The name is Italian for red head. It refers to the red camshaft covers on the sports racing models. Twin side radiators explain the wide rear and the long door strakes.

The mid-mounted flat-12 displaced 4,943 cc. It was the first Ferrari road car engine with four valves per cylinder. Ferrari rated it at 390 hp at 6,300 rpm. It was the first 12-cylinder Ferrari built for the US market in a decade. From 1987 paired mirrors replaced the single pillar mirror. Ferrari built 7,177 Testarossas through the end of 1991. One spider was built for Gianni Agnelli.

The 512 TR began production in 1991 with 428 hp at 6,750 rpm. Ferrari built 2,261 of them from 1991 to 1994. The F512 M followed at the Paris Salon in fall 1994. The M stands for modificata. It made 440 hp, and production ran into early 1996 with 501 cars. The 550 Maranello replaced it. The F512 M was the last mid-engine flat-12 road car. That line began with the 365 GT4/BB concept at the 1971 Turin Salon.
