Ferrari launched the California at the October 2008 Paris Motor Show. It was a new fourth model range for Ferrari. The car was a two-door 2+2 hard top convertible. Ferrari turned to Pininfarina for the design. Its 4,300 cc V8 made 460 hp at 7,750 rpm.

In February 2012 Ferrari announced the California 30. It gained 30 hp over the original car. Ferrari showed it at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2012. A Handling Speciale package joined the options on the California 30.

Ferrari unveiled the California T online on February 12, 2014. It then debuted at the Geneva Motor Show. The T stands for Turbo. Ferrari last used a turbo on the F40 road car. The new 3,855 cc twin-turbo V8 made 560 PS at 7,500 rpm. Ferrari said fuel consumption fell by 15 percent. The Handling Speciale package was offered on the California T as well.

The Portofino replaced the California T. It was due to debut at the 2017 Frankfurt motor show.
