Ferrari announced the 360 Modena at the 1999 Geneva Salon to replace the F355. It was the first production Ferrari constructed entirely in aluminum. The chassis was developed with Alcoa. It gave 40% greater rigidity and a 28% weight saving over the F355, despite being 10% larger. The 3,586 cc V8 produced 400 hp at 8,500 rpm. Buyers could choose a manual gearbox or the electro-hydraulic F1 gearbox. By the end of production, 70% of buyers had chosen the paddle-shift.
The 360 Spider was unveiled at the 2000 Geneva Motor Show. Ferrari called it its 20th road-going convertible. Its hood folded away automatically inside the engine bay. It weighed barely 60 kg more than the berlinetta and shared its engine.
The Challenge Stradale arrived in 2003. Ferrari made it 110 kg lighter than the Modena. Its V8 was boosted to 425 hp.
The 360 had a six-year lifespan. Ferrari's next V8 generation was still based on the 1999 360 chassis. The F430 then succeeded the 360 Modena.
