Yutaka Katayama, the boss of Nissan USA, drove the birth of the 240Z. The 1969 Nissan Fairlady Z was known overseas as the Datsun 240Z. The first 240Z was shown at the Pierre Hotel in New York in the fall of 1969. Its 2.4-liter straight-six produced 151 gross horsepower.

The Japanese Fairlady Z used a 2-liter six rated at 130 hp. Nissan also built the Z 432, with a 160 hp twin-cam 2-liter six. Cost limited it to only 420 units.

Early 240Z cars were built from October 1969 through January 1971. Four series ran through September 1973, totaling just under 150,000 240s in the United States. The 260Z launched for the 1974 model year with a 2.6-liter engine. It was the first Z to offer a 2+2 option. U.S. emissions rules first held the 260Z to 140 hp. A 280Z with a 2.8-liter engine arrived in the U.S. for 1975. It used Bosch L-Jetronic fuel injection in place of carburetors. Close to 450,000 Z cars reached the U.S. from 1969 to 1978. In the rest of the world, the S30 was retired at the end of 1978.
