A one-off show car in January 1949 first carried the Coupe de Ville name. It was based on the Sixty Special. The production Series 62 Coupe de Ville arrived late in the 1949 model year. It was among the first pillarless hardtop coupes, and it sold 2,150 units in its first year. Cadillac added the Sedan de Ville in 1956, its first standard production four-door hardtop. Both moved to their own series in 1959. The 1959 models had tall fins with long, bullet-shaped taillights. A De Ville convertible ran from 1964 through 1970.
Cadillac downsized the De Ville for 1977. The wheelbase fell from 130 inches to 121.5 inches, and weight dropped by 1,000 pounds. A 425-cubic-inch V8 replaced the 500 and made 180 hp. The 1977 model year was the best for De Ville sales since the 1949 introduction, at 234,171 cars. For 1985 the De Ville shrank to a 110.8-inch wheelbase on a transverse front-wheel drive platform. Only 4,711 coupes sold in 1993. The 1994 redesign was a four-door only.
The De Ville name lived on at Cadillac until 2005. Then it became the DTS, which ostensibly stood for De Ville Touring Sedan. The DTS had been on sale since 2006. The final 2011 model was built at Detroit-Hamtramck. Cadillac planned the XTS sedan as its replacement.
