Cadillac built the CTS from 2002 until 2019 across three generations. The first was a sedan on the GM Sigma platform. It marked the production debut of Cadillac's Art and Science design language, first used on the Evoq concept. The 3.2-liter V6 made 220 hp. A 3.6-liter V6 with 255 hp became an option in 2004.
The CTS-V debuted for the 2004 model year with a 5.7-liter V8 and 400 hp. It had a six-speed manual transmission. The second generation offered a sedan, a coupe and a sport wagon. The 2009 CTS-V used a supercharged 6.2-liter LSA V8 with 556 hp. In May 2008 a 2009-model CTS-V sedan lapped the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 7:59.32. That was the fastest documented time for a production sedan on factory tires until July 2009.
The third generation used a stretched version of the GM Alpha platform. Cadillac unveiled it before the 2013 New York International Auto Show. Its twin-turbocharged 3.6-liter V6 made 420 horsepower with Cadillac's first eight-speed automatic. The 2016 CTS-V used the supercharged V8 from the 2015 Corvette Z06, rated at 640 horsepower. The CTS ended production in 2019. The CT5 replaced it.
