BMW showed the first M3 at the Frankfurt Motor Show in the fall of 1985. It was based on the E30 3 Series. The car entered the German market in 1986 at DM 58,000. BMW planned it as a Group A racing car. That class required 5,000 cars in 12 successive months. Power rose from 195 hp to 238 hp across the versions. The Sport Evolution was limited to 600 units. By the end of 1991, 17,970 first generation M3s had left the plant.
The second generation arrived in 1992 as the first M3 with a six-cylinder engine. Its 3.0-liter made 286 hp. A 3.2-liter engine with 321 hp was announced on July 20, 1995. BMW built 71,242 of these cars until production ended in 1999. They came as coupe, convertible and sedan.
The E46 M3 entered the market toward the end of 2000. Its six-cylinder made 343 hp. The M3 CSL made 360 hp. BMW delivered 85,139 E46 M3s by summer 2006. The 2007 M3 had the first eight-cylinder in an M3, a 4.0-liter V8 with 420 hp. The M3 Sedan and the M4 Coupe made their world debuts on January 13, 2014 in Detroit. The F80 used a turbocharged inline-six with 431 hp, or 450 hp with the Competition package.
BMW introduced the G80 M3 on September 22, 2020. M xDrive for Competition models was a first for the M3. The first M3 Touring has 510 hp. BMW still builds the M3.
