BMW sold the 2002 from 1968 through 1976. It grew out of the Neue Klasse compacts, which began in 1962. BMW first showed the shorter two-door 1602 at the 1966 Geneva Auto Salon. The 2002 was developed with encouragement from U.S. importer Max Hoffman. BMW installed the 2.0-liter M10 engine in the two-door body. The name combines a 2000 cc engine with 2 doors.

The base car used a single Solex carburetor. The tii added Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection and 130 horsepower. BMW introduced the 2002 turbo in September 1973 at the Frankfurt Auto Show. It made 170 horsepower. Classic & Sports Car calls it Europe's very first turbocharged road car. A global oil crisis took hold less than a month later. BMW did not sell the turbo in the U.S. Just 1,672 were built.

Versions never sold in the U.S. included a Baur targa conversion, a handful of 1971-only convertibles and the hatchback Touring. Squared-off energy-absorbing bumpers arrived in 1974. The final model year of 1976 brought more emissions changes. The problematic thermal reactor was removed that year.
