Aston Martin showed the DB9 at the 2003 Frankfurt motor show. Production began in early 2004. The DB9 was the first car built at the company's first purpose-built factory, in Gaydon, Warwickshire. It was also the first to use the VH platform. VH stands for vertical/horizontal. The DB9 replaced the DB7. Its body used extruded aluminum sections that were bonded and riveted together. Power came from a 5.9-liter V12 rated at 450bhp. A Volante version was first shown in Detroit in 2004.

Updates came often. At the Geneva show in 2008, a revised DB9 offered 470bhp. In 2012 Aston Martin reworked the car with items from the V12 Virage. Nearly 50 percent of the parts were replaced, and the V12 made 510bhp. The DB9 GT replaced that car in 2015. Its V12 made 540bhp, enough for 0-62mph in 4.5 seconds. A DB9 GT Bond edition was built to coincide with the film Spectre.

The last nine DB9s came from a special series by the Q by Aston Martin personalization department. They had their final inspection on July 27, 2016. The final nine examples rolled off the Gaydon assembly line in the UK. The DB11 replaced the DB9.
