Honda showed the NSX at the Chicago Auto Show in February 1989. Honda had commissioned Pininfarina in 1984 to design the HP-X concept car. The NSX went on sale in Japan in 1990. Acura began selling it in North America in November 1990. It was the first production car with an all-aluminum semi-monocoque. Power came from a 3.0-liter V6 rated at 270 hp.

Honda decided in 1992 to build a track-focused NSX-R. Fewer than 500 were made for the Japanese market. The NSX-T with a removable targa top reached North America in March 1995. In 1997 manual cars grew from a 3.0-liter to a 3.2-liter V6. Power rose from 270 hp to 290 hp. A facelift in December 2001 replaced the pop-up headlamps with fixed xenon units. Production of this first generation ended on November 30, 2005. Honda sold more than 18,000 worldwide by June 2005.

A second-generation NSX reached production in 2016. Acura announced in March 2016 that serial production would start in late April. It was built at the Performance Manufacturing Center in Marysville, Ohio. This was the first time the car was made outside Japan. The new NSX was a hybrid with a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6, three electric motors and 573 horsepower. The 2022 model year was the last. The Type S used a 600-hp version of that powertrain. Only 300 were offered in the U.S.
