About the 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe
The 300SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe represents the ultimate expression of 1950s racing technology, essentially a street-legal version of the car that dominated sports car racing in 1955. Named after chief engineer Rudolf Uhlenhaut, who used one as his daily driver, only two examples were ever built. The 3.0-liter straight-eight produced 310 hp, astronomical for 1955, and could reach 180 mph, making it faster than most modern supercars. When one sold for €135 million in 2022, it became the most expensive car ever sold, reflecting not just its rarity but its significance as a bridge between Mercedes' racing heritage and road car development. The remaining example resides in the Mercedes museum, making this the ultimate unicorn for collectors who can only dream of ownership.
