Cadillac's ambitious attempt to challenge the BMW 3 Series, the ATS represented a dramatic departure from traditional American luxury. Built on GM's Alpha platform with near-perfect 50/50 weight distribution, this compact sport sedan delivered genuinely European handling dynamics that shocked critics. The base model's 2.5-liter four-cylinder was adequate, but enthusiasts gravitated toward the available 2.0-liter turbo four producing 272 horsepower or the optional 3.6-liter V6 with 321 horses. Magnetic Ride Control and Brembo brakes were available, creating a surprisingly capable track weapon. While sales never matched Cadillac's expectations, the ATS earned respect for its chassis engineering and marked a turning point in GM's luxury ambitions. Today's collectors appreciate early examples as undervalued performance bargains, particularly V-Sport variants and manual transmission models, which are increasingly rare in the luxury segment.
