Subaru Tecnica International, the automaker's motorsports division, was founded in 1988. The WRX STI launched in the United States for the 2004 model year, with a price of $31,520. It carried a 2.5-liter engine and a six-speed manual transmission. Power was 300 hp from the flat EJ25 four-cylinder. Hagerty reports that Subaru sold 25,813 STIs in the United States from 2004 to 2007. In 2006 Subaru replaced the blobeye front design with the hawkeye design. The STI Limited was added for 2007, and just 800 were built.
Subaru of America introduced the all-new 2015 WRX STI at the Detroit auto show on January 13, 2014. It was a four-door sedan on a stiffer chassis with a 305-horsepower 2.5-liter turbocharged boxer engine. The STI Launch Edition was limited to 1,000 units. Active Torque Vectoring was new for 2015.
Subaru later sold special versions in the United States. The 2018 model year brought the WRX STI Type RA. The STI S209 followed with 341 horsepower. By the 2021 model year the 2.5-liter turbo flat-4 made 310 hp, and the only transmission was a six-speed manual.
In April 2021 Subaru Australia announced a numbered EJ25 Final Edition. In March 2022 Subaru said a next-generation internal combustion WRX STI would not be produced on the new WRX platform.
