The GT500KR, the most traded version: The GT500KR—King of the Road—represents the apex of first-generation Shelby Mustang performance. Introduced mid-1968, the KR replaced the standard GT500's 428 Police Interceptor with Ford's legendary 428 Cobra Jet, officially rated at 335 horsepower but widely acknowledged to produce significantly more. The Ram Air induction system and functional hood scoop helped feed the beast, while the close-ratio 4-speed Toploader transmission put power to the ground through a 3.91:1 Traction-Lok differential. Only 1,053 fastback KRs were built across the abbreviated production run, making them exponentially rarer than standard GT500s.
