Porsche launched the 944 at the 1981 Frankfurt motor show. It was a comprehensive evolution of the 924, with wide wheels, even wider arches and a new Porsche-developed engine. It reached customers in 1982 with a front-mounted engine and a rear-mounted transaxle. The 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine drew on the architecture and basic design of the 928 V8. Balance shafts smoothed out much of its roughness. It initially delivered 163 PS. Audi also built this transaxle car in Neckarsulm, Germany.
The 944 Turbo became the top model in January 1985. Its 2.5-liter turbocharged engine delivered 220 PS. In model year 1988 the Turbo S produced up to 250 PS with a larger turbocharger. The 944 S of model years 1987 and 1988 used a four-valve engine of up to 190 PS.
In model year 1989 the 944 S2 replaced the 944 S. Its 3.0-liter four-valve engine delivered 211 PS, and a Cabriolet version was also offered. In the last model year, 1991, the 944 Turbo also came as a Cabriolet. The 968 replaced the 944 in 1992.
