McLaren unveiled the 720S at the 2017 Geneva Auto Show. It replaced the 650S. It was the first of 15 new models McLaren planned to launch by 2022. Customer deliveries began in May 2017. It went into production for the 2018 model year.

A new 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 powered the car. McLaren said 41 percent of its parts were new compared with the 3.8-liter V8 of the 650S. Rated power was 720 PS at 7,500 rpm, which gave the car its name. McLaren quoted 0 to 200 km/h in 7.8 seconds and a top speed of 341 km/h. A new carbon-fiber monocoque called Monocage II brought dry weight to 1,283 kg.

The 720S Spider was introduced in December 2018. The 765LT followed, with production limited to 765 cars and deliveries in October 2020. Production of the 2023 model year ended in December 2022. The 750S replaced the 720S in 2023. Its name refers to 750 metric horsepower.
