Mazda showed the MX-5 at the Chicago Auto Show in February 1989. Mass production began that April at Ujina Plant No. 1 in Hiroshima. The first car used a 1.6-liter engine from the Mazda 323 and weighed less than 1,000 kg. From 1994 the NA carried a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine.
The NB arrived in 1998 and replaced the pop-up headlamps with oval lamps. A short-lived turbocharged Mazdaspeed version followed. The NC came in 2005. A power-retractable hardtop version followed. North American NC cars used a 2.0-liter MZR engine. The ND arrived in 2015 with 1.5-liter and 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G engines. Mazda says it was almost 100 kg lighter than the previous generation.
By May 2000 Mazda had built 531,890 MX-5s, a total certified for a Guinness World Record. The record covers the best-selling open-top two-seater sports car. Production passed 700,000 in April 2005 and 900,000 in February 2011. Mazda built the one-millionth MX-5 on April 22, 2016. The ND won World Car of the Year and World Car Design of the Year in 2016. Spec Miata racing was founded in 1999. Mazda raised the ND's 2.0-liter output for 2019. The MX-5 remains in production.
