The Ghibli began as a coupe unveiled at the 1966 Turin Motor Show. Giorgetto Giugiaro styled it. It had a 4.7-liter quad-cam dry-sump V8 with 310 hp.
The modern Ghibli sedan was unveiled to the public at the 2013 Shanghai Motor Show. It was assembled alongside the Quattroporte VI at the Giovanni Agnelli plant in Grugliasco near Turin. It was offered with two 3.0-liter V6 engines, one of them a diesel. The Ghibli S first made 410 PS and was uprated to 430 PS in 2017. A 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 325 bhp was also offered.
The Ghibli Trofeo added a twin-turbo 3.8-liter V8 built at Ferrari's plant in Maranello. It develops 580 hp. In 2023 Maserati announced the Ghibli 334 Ultima to mark the end of its V8 engines. The name refers to a top speed of 334 km/h. Maserati planned 103 examples. The Ghibli ended production at the end of 2023.
