Land Rover launched the Range Rover in Cornwall in 1970. It came only as a two-door. It had a lightweight aluminum V8, full-time four-wheel drive and disc brakes on all four wheels. Charles Spencer King, Rover's engineering chief of new vehicle projects, designed it. In 1971 it became the first vehicle displayed at the Louvre.

A four-door body arrived in 1981 and an automatic transmission in 1982. In 1989 it became the world's first 4x4 with ABS. In 1992 it became the world's first 4x4 with electronic traction control and automatic electronic air suspension. Land Rover counts 317,615 first-generation units.

The second generation, the P38A, launched in 1994. Land Rover developed it in building 38A at Solihull. The third generation, the L322, ran from 2001 to 2012. Land Rover built the half-millionth Range Rover in 2002. The fourth generation, the L405, launched on September 6, 2012. Land Rover calls it the first all-aluminum SUV. By 2020 over a million Range Rovers had been sold.

The fifth generation was unveiled on October 26, 2021, at the Royal Opera House in London. Solihull builds it exclusively. It comes in standard and long wheelbase with four, five or seven seats. The plug-in hybrids made 510 PS and 440 PS.
