The Land Rover Discovery Series 2 was built from 1998 to 2004.
The Discovery, the most traded version: The first-generation Discovery represents Land Rover's brilliant pivot from purely utilitarian vehicles to family-friendly adventure machines. Launched in 1989 and refined through 2004, the Discovery combined genuine off-road capability with seven-seat practicality that no competitor could match. The distinctive stepped roofline and asymmetrical rear spare tire mount became iconic design elements that defined the SUV aesthetic of the 1990s. Under the hood, the reliable 4.0-liter Rover V8 delivered adequate power while the coil-spring suspension provided a civilized on-road ride without compromising its legendary rock-crawling abilities. These Discoverys are increasingly sought after by collectors who appreciate their honest engineering and pre-electronic simplicity. Clean examples with maintenance records are becoming harder to find, particularly the desirable Series I models. For enthusiasts seeking authentic British adventure capability without Defender harshness, the Discovery offers compelling value in today's collector market.
