The Land Rover Discovery Series 1 was built from 1989 to 1998.
The Discovery, the most traded version: The original Land Rover Discovery redefined the SUV landscape when it debuted in 1989, bringing genuine off-road capability to families who'd previously been stuck with station wagons. Designed by Conran Design Group with distinctive stepped roofline and asymmetrical rear spare tire, the Disco became an instant icon. The robust ladder-frame chassis and permanent four-wheel drive system made it unstoppable in the rough, while the spacious seven-seat interior kept it civilized on school runs. Early models featured the reliable 3.5-liter Rover V8, later joined by the torquey 200 TDI diesel that became legendary among overlanders. With rust being the primary enemy, clean examples are increasingly sought after by collectors who appreciate honest capability over luxury pretense. The Discovery's blend of ruggedness and practicality makes it a compelling alternative to the more obvious Defender, especially for those wanting classic Land Rover DNA with modern usability.
