The Land Rover launched at the Amsterdam Motor Show on April 30, 1948. It later became known as the Series I. In 1983 the Series III was modernized with a new One-Ten model. Coil springs replaced leaf springs. In 1990 the Ninety and One-Ten were renamed Defender 90, 110 and 130.
A major update in 2007 brought a new four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine and a six-speed manual gearbox. Production ended in January 2016. The final Defender, a 90 Heritage soft top, was the 2,016,933rd built. It stays in the Land Rover Heritage Collection.
The new Defender broke cover at the 2019 Frankfurt motor show on a D7x architecture. It came in 90 and 110 body designs. Land Rover revealed the eight-seat Defender 130 on May 31, 2022. Land Rover now lists Defender Hard Top models, a 110 electric hybrid and the OCTA. Defender is designed and engineered in the UK and sold in 121 countries.
