Jaguar introduced the XJS in September 1975 with the 5.3-liter V12 engine. It replaced the E-type, which ended in 1974. Malcolm Sayer shaped the aerodynamic design, including the rear buttresses. Priced at £8,900 in Britain, it was the most expensive production car Jaguar had built to that point.

Jaguar announced the HE version in 1981. Its new cylinder head used the Fireball combustion chamber designed by Michael May. In 1983 the AJ6 3.6-liter six-cylinder engine arrived in a new cabriolet. Jaguar restyled the car in 1991 and the badge became XJS.

Tom Walkinshaw Racing first entered XJS cars in the European Touring Car Group A championship in 1982. In 1984 Tom Walkinshaw won that championship. He also won the Spa 24-hour race with co-driver Win Percy.

In 1995 the six-cylinder cars became the Celebration models to mark the run-out. Production came to an end in April 1996, before the new XK8 sports car. A total of 115,413 XJS cars were made over twenty-one years.
