Ford unveiled a GT40 concept car at the Detroit show in 2002. Ford chief executive William Clay Ford Jr. approved a limited production version. He wanted the first cars ready in 16 months, in time for the company's centennial. The production GT used a 5.4-liter supercharged V8 rated at 550 bhp. Ford planned 4,500 cars. Production ended in September 2006 with 4,038 built.

Ford returned with an all-new GT at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show. Ford aimed to win its class at the 2016 24 Hours of Le Mans. That was 50 years after the GT40's 1-2-3 sweep. A 3.5-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 made 647 hp. It drove through a seven-speed Getrag dual-clutch transmission. Ford planned 1,350 cars through the 2022 model year. Applications outnumbered available chassis by nearly tenfold. Multimatic, a Canadian specialty company, built the car.

Ford said the 2022 model year would be the last. By then car number 1,100 of 1,350 had left the line. Multimatic was due to end production in December. For 2023 Ford offered the GT Mk IV, a track-only car. Only 67 hand-built cars were planned. The Mk IV honors the 1967 GT Mk IV race car that won Le Mans with Dan Gurney and A.J. Foyt.
