Dodge introduced the Ramcharger in 1974. It rode on a short-wheelbase Dodge pickup chassis, shared with the Plymouth Trail Duster. The truck was known as the Rhino early in its development. Dodge dealers received more than 15,000 examples. Only a few more than 5,000 carried Plymouth badges.
First-year trucks were four-wheel drive only. A rear-wheel-drive version arrived in 1975. Models from 1974 through 1980 had no roof, a dealer-installed fabric top, or an optional removable steel roof. Early 1974 trucks had half-doors, and the roof was restyled midway through the year to fit regular pickup-style doors. The standard engine was a 225-cubic-inch slant-six. Four optional V8s ranged from 318 to 440 cubic inches.
The second generation arrived in 1981 and ran through 1993. It had a fixed metal roof and a one-piece rear hatch hinged at the top. Buyers could choose a 5.2-liter or 5.9-liter V8. Rear antilock brakes arrived in 1989. Hagerty says the market took a major turn when Ford introduced the four-door Explorer in 1991. The Plymouth Trail Duster was offered from 1974 to 1981. Dodge discontinued the Ramcharger at the end of the 1993 model year in North America. Production continued in Mexico until 1996.
