Dodge introduced the Charger on January 1, 1966. It was the brand's first production fastback. The Charger was a Coronet-based fastback with two bucket seats in front and two folding buckets in back. The base engine was a 318 V8 with 230 hp. The 426 Street Hemi was rated at 425 hp. Dodge sold 37,344 Chargers in 1966 and 15,788 in 1967.

The Charger was redesigned for 1968 with scalloped styling and hidden headlights. A black 1968 Charger R/T with a 440 Magnum V8 appeared in the film Bullitt. The 1969 Charger Daytona was the first stock car to break 200 mph on a closed course. Just over 500 were built. The 1971 Charger Super Bee was the most powerful Charger at that time. The 1975 Charger was based on the Chrysler Cordoba. The 1978 Charger Magnum XE ended that era of rear-wheel-drive Chargers.

The Charger returned for 1981 as a front-wheel-drive hatchback with four-cylinder power. In 2006 it came back as a rear-drive four-door with a 5.7-liter Hemi V8 at 340 hp. The 2015 Charger SRT Hellcat had a supercharged 6.2-liter Hemi with 707 hp. The 2022 Hellcat Redeye Jailbreak reached 807 hp. The 2023 Last Call models marked the end of the seventh generation.

The eighth generation began in 2024 with the all-electric Charger Daytona Scat Pack at 670 hp. The 2026 SIXPACK-powered Charger Scat Pack makes 550 hp and the R/T makes 420 hp. Every Charger has all-wheel drive in two-door or four-door form.
