Chevrolet's modern pickup line starts with the AK Series in 1941. The Advance Design series came next in 1947, as GM's first postwar truck platform. The Task Force generation arrived in 1955 with an optional 265 cubic inch small-block V8.
The 1960 redesign brought a drop-center ladder frame and the C/K names. C meant two-wheel drive and K meant four-wheel drive. The K trucks used the first four-wheel-drive system GM designed for Chevrolet. The 1967 trucks were called Action Line. The K5 Blazer debuted in 1969. Front disc brakes arrived on all light-duty trucks in 1971.
The third generation arrived in mid-1972 as a 1973 model. Many call it the Square Body. A Crew Cab arrived in 1973. For 1987 the C/K name changed to R/V to separate these trucks from the upcoming GMT400.
The fourth generation, the GMT400, began with the 1988 model year. All its trucks, including four-wheel drive, had independent front suspension. A 454-SS performance model with a 454 cubic inch V8 was offered in the early 1990s. GM dropped the C/K names for 1999 in favor of Silverado. C/K pickups ended after the 2000 model year. Heavy-duty versions continued through 2002.
