Cadillac introduced the XLR at the 2003 North American International Auto Show. Production began for the 2004 model year. The XLR was a two-seat roadster with a power retractable hardtop. Its styling was essentially a production version of Cadillac's 1999 Evoq concept.
The XLR shared its basic platform with the Chevrolet Corvette. It was built alongside the Corvette at the Bowling Green plant. Power came from a 4.6-liter Northstar V8 with 320 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. Like the Corvette, the XLR used a rear transaxle. A five-speed automatic was the only gearbox choice.
The XLR-V debuted for the 2006 model year. It used a supercharged 4.4-liter Northstar V8 with 443 hp and 414 lb-ft of torque. It was paired with a six-speed automatic.
The 2009 model year brought new front and rear fascias and chrome side fender vents. XLR production ended on March 31, 2009. About 15,000 XLRs were sold during its six model year run.
