BMW launched the Z4 roadster on October 22, 2002, to replace the Z3. It was built at the Spartanburg plant in South Carolina. More than 100,000 were built there in just two years. A coupe joined the roadster in 2006. BMW stopped Spartanburg production of the E85 roadster and E86 coupe in 2008. The last car left the line on August 27.
The second generation, the E89, was BMW's first roadster with a retractable hardtop. BMW announced the all-new 2009 Z4 for the Detroit auto show. The sDrive35i had a twin-turbo 3.0-liter six with 300 hp. The sDrive30i had a naturally aspirated six rated at 255 hp. Production moved to Regensburg, Germany.
The G29 followed after a gap. BMW staged its world premiere at Pebble Beach on August 23, 2018. The Z4 M40i First Edition had a 340 hp straight-six. The car returned to an electrically operated textile soft top. The G29 shared its platform with the Toyota Supra, and Magna Steyr built both. The last G29 left the line in Graz, Austria, in May 2026. BMW has no direct replacement lined up.
