BMW revealed the i8 in Frankfurt in 2013, alongside the fully electric i3. Production of the coupe started in Leipzig in 2014. The i8 is a plug-in hybrid. A turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine powers the rear wheels, and an electric motor drives the front wheels for all-wheel drive. The coupe is made of carbon fiber and has butterfly doors.
BMW launched a two-seat roadster for 2019 at the Los Angeles show, with an updated coupe. The three-cylinder engine made 228 horsepower. A larger battery raised energy capacity from 7.1 kWh to 11.6 kWh. The electric motor gained 12 horsepower, to 141 horsepower. BMW quoted 0 to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds for the coupe and 4.4 seconds for the roadster. The roadster joined the Leipzig line in February 2018.
Production ended in June 2020. BMW had planned the end for April 2020, but the coronavirus lockdown caused a two-month break. BMW built the final 18 cars in close collaboration with their buyers. No direct successor had been announced at that time.
