Audi presented the first TT as a concept sports car at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt in 1995. American designer Freeman Thomas created it under Head of Design Peter Schreyer. The name comes from the Tourist Trophy on the Isle of Man. The TT Coupe reached the market in the fall of 1998, and the Roadster followed one year later. The first TT used a turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine with 180 hp or 225 hp. Audi built 178,765 first-generation Coupes up to mid-2006, and 90,733 Roadsters between 1999 and 2006.

The second generation appeared in 2006. Its turbocharged engines developed between 160 hp and 211 hp. Audi added an S version with 272 hp and the TT RS with 340 hp. The later TT RS plus produced 360 hp. The second TT was the first sports car with TDI technology.

The third generation launched in 2014 and weighed only 1,230 kilograms. Production ended at the Györ factory in Hungary on November 10, 2023. Audi produced 662,762 units across three generations of the TT since 1998.
