The Alfa Romeo 105 series began with the Giulia sedan in June 1962. The coupés followed in 1963 on a shortened Giulia floorpan. Giorgetto Giugiaro styled them at Bertone. Alfa Romeo revealed the Giulia Sprint GT at its Arese plant on September 9, 1963. It appeared later that month at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Studio chief Nuccio Bertone had planned a small series. Alfa management adopted the car as a catalog model from 1963. The 1750 GTV arrived in late 1967 and the 2000 GTV in 1971. The coupé range ran until 1977.

Alfa Romeo unveiled the Spider 1600 at the Geneva motor show in March 1966. A naming competition produced the Duetto name. It reflects two seats, twin cams and twin carburetors. Battista Pininfarina signed off the design and died days after the debut. In 1968 Alfa Romeo fitted a 1,779 cc engine and used the 1750 name. The 1970 Series 2 added a Kamm tail. The Spider 2000 Veloce arrived in 1971 with a 1,962 cc engine. It delivered around 130bhp, depending on the market. With 40,534 sold, it became the best-selling Spider.

Pininfarina updated the Spider for the 1990s with the Series 4 in 1990. The Spider's basic shape lasted to its end in 1993. Across a 27-year run, Alfa Romeo built 124,104 Spiders of all types. The Type 916 Spider arrived in 1995. It shared only the name and the Pininfarina design work with the earlier car.
